My psychotherapeutic approach is rooted in the psychoanalytic tradition, which understands psychological conflict in the context of one’s development, personality, relationships, and emotional life. Rather than attending to the management of symptoms, psychodynamic psychotherapy views and addresses such phenomena as indicators of the underlying, maladaptive psychological organizations from which they arise.
Our present life experience; that of ourselves, others, and the world at large, is influenced by far more than what is immediately or apparently conscious. Formative experiences, attachment patterns, internal conflicts, defenses, and assumptions about ourselves and others are ever influencing how we think, feel, behave, and relate in the world. Such influences are often difficult to recognize subjectively, particularly when they have become familiar and automatic modes of intake and response.
Psychodynamic psycho therapy affords an opportunity to examine the self and its patterns within a container of thoughtful attunement and intrepidity. Through careful attention to one’s inner world, recurring themes, and the therapeutic alliance, identification of unconscious psychological operations can be achieved and addressed. Developing a deeper understanding of these processes naturally cultivates a self-mastery which gives way to the freedom of choice in thought, feeling, and action.
Individually, I am particularly interested in the ways personality develops over time and in how unconscious processes, attachment experiences, and internal conflicts contribute to psychological distress and psychopathology. My approach is insight-driven and exploratory, while remaining attentive to the individual circumstances and objectives of each person.
